How to compare gas plans in Australia

Gas plans are simpler than electricity plans, but there are still a few things worth understanding before you compare, because the cheapest plan on paper isn't always the cheapest for your home.

1. Usage charges (cents per MJ)

Gas is billed in megajoules. Most plans use stepped pricing: the first block of gas you use each day or billing period is charged at one rate, and usage above that at another. A plan with a low first-block price can be great for a small household and poor value for a large one, so it's important to compare on your actual usage.

2. Daily supply charge

A fixed charge for being connected to the gas network, payable every day whether or not you use gas. If you only use gas for cooking, the supply charge may be most of your bill, and it's worth asking whether staying connected to gas makes sense at all.

3. Discounts, bundles and benefit periods

Dual-fuel discounts for taking gas and electricity together are common. They're worth having, but only if both plans are competitive on their own. Check too whether any discount ends after a benefit period, which can quietly lift your bill after the first year.

Rule of thumb: compare estimated annual cost for your usage, and compare each fuel on its own before you decide on a bundle. Our comparison shows both.

Gas and electricity: bundle or split?

Bundling gets you one bill and often a discount, and it's easier to manage. Splitting fuels between two retailers can save more when one retailer is sharp on gas and another on electricity. Neither is right for everyone. Enter your address and choose "Both" to see the two options side by side, or start with our electricity comparison if that's your bigger bill.

FAQs

Gas comparison FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about comparing and switching gas plans.

  • How do I compare gas plans?

Enter your address above and choose "Gas" (or "Both" if you'd like to compare electricity at the same time). We'll show you the gas plans available at your home with usage and supply charges side by side, so you can see the real cost for your household rather than a headline discount.

  • Sometimes, but not always. Dual-fuel plans can come with an extra discount or a single bill for convenience, but the best gas plan and the best electricity plan aren't always from the same retailer. Our comparison lets you compare each fuel on its own and as a bundle, so you can decide.

  • No. Your gas is delivered by the local distribution network, and switching only changes which retailer bills you. Nothing needs to be disconnected and nobody needs to visit your home.

  • Gas is measured in megajoules (MJ). Your bill has a usage charge per MJ, often in stepped blocks where the first block of usage each day or quarter is priced differently to the rest, plus a fixed daily supply charge. Because of the blocks, the cheapest plan can depend on how much gas you use, which is why we compare on your estimated usage.

  • Gas heating and hot water use much more energy in the colder months, so winter bills are usually the largest of the year. Comparing plans before winter, and following our energy saving tips for heating and hot water, is the best way to keep them down.

  • We compare residential natural gas plans in New South Wales, Victoria, South East Queensland and South Australia, wherever reticulated (piped) gas is available. If your home uses bottled LPG, our comparison won't apply, but we can still help with your electricity.

  • No. Your address is enough to find your gas meter (your MIRN or DPI) and show the plans available. If you do have a recent bill, it helps us estimate your usage more accurately.
